changeling: the dreaming

Hollow Dreams Fae

Welcome to the Nightingale's Heart and the Fae game here at Hollow Dreams. So why come here? There's a number of Fae games out there, many of them quite good. What makes this chat different? There's some obvious answers that might be superficially appealing. You can play more character types here. There's more opportunity for crossover. London is a nice city. Some characters get to start with Title. Those things might be nice to some players (and they might bother others) but they hardly make a chat special. Here's what we're really about here at Hollow Dreams.

Theme: The theme of this game is "coming together while celebrating difference". Fae are dying all over the world. The Nunnehi are cut off from the Happy Hunting Grounds, slowly dying as the Kithain usurp their lands and their own peoples abandon their dreams. The Kithain lose ground to Banality every day. The Hsien are exiled from their spiritual homelands. The Merfolk drown in their ocean homes as human shipping and dumping extends Banality ever deeper into the seas. The Inanimae fall into deeper and longer slumbers as the world becomes less enchanted with each passing day. The Menehune fade away on their island homes, trapped by ancient traditions. The Adhene are whispers of a more ancient past lost in a world they cannot understand. They all suffer from similar problems and yet distrust and even war prevails between them in almost all of the world. Aigeus Damaskinos and the students and teachers of the University of Dreams have seen the writing on the wall: Live together or die alone.

This is the overarching theme but it doesn't have to be your story. We've built a setting with lots of room to play in. Your character's story might be about proving yourself or true love or retaining honour in a world of moral ambiguity. That's welcome. Many different stories can weave into the overarching theme. They enrich it.

What else is this game about?

Initiative: We have the Noble Council. We allow some PC Freeholders, both Noble and Common. We allow PCs to have court positions or be professors. We allow you to form motleys, households, coveys, corbies, tragos, cliques, or whatever other groups you want. We'll always respond to requests for a specific scene or side story. We want PCs to act on their own and drive the game, not simply respond to major ST-run SLs.

Tensions: We've built this game so that most major, violent threats will come from outside the player base. However, that doesn't mean we expect everyone to get along. Overcoming differences doesn't mean immediately treating everyone in an enlightened manner. It means starting out with normal preconceptions and fears and working through them as play progresses. Even then, some honest differences will remain. There's lots of different groups available as PCs and some of them will have tensions. These tensions aren't designed to split the venue but to allow more dynamic, player-driven play and to allow more complex political maneuvering in game. Just think. While overcoming difficulties is an ultimate goal, Noble v Commoner, Fae v Prodigal, Kithain v Gallain, Seelie v Unseelie, all these tensions are deeply rooted in the game world and fun for more than a few sideplots.

Glamour: Don't forget about the eternal struggle with Banality. Don't just hang out in Changeling rooms and treat Changeling like a high fantasy game. The Autumn is always the backdrop and the struggle against Banality harder than any other fight. Take the time to go into a public room and do something Glamorous.

Fun: A no brainer but the most important. We want you to have fun. We want to have fun too, come to think of it.

Please check the forums for more detailed information on the dynamic and permeable setting.
